The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) is collaborating with GRA to ensure a smooth implementation of the Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) policy. Consequently, the Authority wishes to bring the following to the notice of the general public in order to facilitate service delivery.

1. The Tax Identification Number (TIN) is compulsory.

2. Customers are expected to provide their TIN before service will be rendered to them.

3. Customers who do not have the TIN number are entreated to, as quickly as possible, contact the closest GRA office and acquire the TIN first before going to DVLA to access service. GRA has, however, set up desks within the Accra 37, Tema, Weija and Koforidua offices to issue the TIN to customers who will transact business in those offices. Customers who do not have the TIN could make use of those offices instead of going to the GRA office.

4. Persons who wish to undertake services on behalf of others must be in a position to provide the TIN of the actual customer before being able to transact business on their behalf.

5. The TIN is issued free of charge. Customers must, therefore, report any person/officer who will demand payment before processing the TIN.

Many people don’t realize the risks associated with drowsy driving, but if you really take a second to think about how you feel when you are tired, the risks should be clear. According to the National Sleep Foundation, sleepiness or fatigue can cause:

Remember, if you are driving and experience any of the warning signs of drowsy driving, you must take action and get off the road safely. The warning signs to look out for include:

  • Difficulty focusing on the road
  • Excessive yawning
  • Drifting into other lanes

If you exhibit any of these signs, please take action to keep yourself safe. Of course, the best solution is to avoid driving drowsy altogether. Here are some steps you can take to prevent sleepiness while driving:

  • Get 7-9 hours of sleep every night
  • Plan ahead for long trips, including rest stops and breaks
  • Take breaks every few hours of driving
  • Travel with a passenger and have them help you drive

If you snooze while on the road, you could lose everything. Just like other driving dangers, it is simply not worth it. It doesn’t matter how much coffee you drink, what kind of music you play, or how far down you roll the window; nothing beats a good night of sleep. Make sure that you are always rested and alert before you turn that key!

Please remember that every time you get behind the wheel you have a duty to yourself and the other drivers on the road to ensure you are fit to operate your vehicle. If you are impaired in any way, whether it be drugs, alcohol, distractions or drowsiness, the best decision you can make is NOT to drive.

The management of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority wishes to explain to its cherished customers that the symbol ‘A’ and the glasses ( ) at the back of the New Smart Driver’s Licence is for the purpose of information and subsequent interpretation by enforcement agencies. The same symbols, however, become RESTRICTIVE SYMBOLS when an applicant is deemed to be competent in driving an automatic vehicle ONLY or could drive ONLY with the aid of medicated glasses. At that point, both symbols or one of them is placed on top of the photograph of the owner, on the front page of the Driver’s Licence, to restrict the driver to the type of vehicle to drive or request the driver to always drive with medicated glasses. It becomes an offence punishable by law when a driver who is restricted to driving an automatic vehicle ONLY, is found driving a manual vehicle or a driver who is supposed to drive with the aid of medicated glasses is found driving without the aid of glasses.
